Today, Glendale is a sports destination for football fans, hockey fans and those who enjoy the outdoors while taking in a spring training baseball game. With state-of-the-art facilities like the Gila River Arena and State Farm Stadium, Glendale is the host of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, BCS Championship games as well the 2008 Super Bowl.
Before the notoriety Glendale earned as the sporting hot-spot in Arizona, it was an empty desert which later fostered a large part of Arizona’s fruit farming industry. In 1882, William J. Murphy, along with three local builders, M.W. Kales, William A. Hancock and Clark Churchill, created the Arizona Canal Co. project, which would bring water to the area.
As the area continued to develop, Glendale’s Beet Sugar Factory was an important part of the city’s early economic success. The structure still stands today just southeast of downtown Glendale. Farms and orchards grew throughout the early 1900s. Other historic businesses include the Glendale Ice Co., the Pacific Creamery Co., the Southwest Flour and Feed Co. and the Glendale Milling Co.
Today, Glendale is still well-known for its fabulous art district and antique collecting, however other economic contributors include retail, Honeywell, Luke Air Force Base, medical, education and resale real estate and development.

Just a few minutes down the Loop 101 Freeway is the renowed Westgate City Center which is the newest Entertainment District in Glendale - home to the Arizona Cardinals who play at the State Farm Stadium and the Arizona Coyotes who play at Gila River Arena. Westgate City Center hosts a plethora of hot restaurants, retail shops and outdoor entertainment.
If you are a baseball enthusiastic, Arizona is the place to be for spring training! Glendale is the spring training location for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox. Hundreds of locals and fans, who travel to Arizona to watch their favorite team prepare for the season, enjoy a hot dog, fresh cut grass and the awesome spring weather in Arizona.
Although snow is not something Arizona experiences very often, Glendale residents still love to celebrate the holidays. Every year Glendale Glitters lights up Murphy Park in downtown Glendale with 1.5 million holiday lights. The festival begins Thanksgiving weekend and runs through the first of the year and features horse-drawn carriage rides, visits from Santa, live holiday music, craft shows and home-made goodies. Murphy Park hosts a variety of community events throughout the year, like the Glitter and Glow Hot Air Balloon Show, The Chocolate Affaire and the annual Jazz and Blues Festival.
Parks, Recreation
Just to the northwest of Glendale is Pleasant Harbor Marina at Lake Pleasant which offers boat rentals, boat storage, swimming, skiing, camping and fishing. If hiking is more your style, Glendale has beautiful hiking trails at Thunderbird Conservation Park which is a 1,185-acre park dedicated to preserving the desert environment. Glendale is also the home to several established golf courses including the newly renovated Arrowhead Country Club. To beat the summer heat, there is always Arizona’s biggest ‘n’ best water parks, Wet’nWild, perfect for every member of the family.
